Rice farmers protest major firm over nonpayment for paddies

Scores of rice farmers armed with placards staged a picketing exercise at Ruimzeigt, West Coast Demerara (WCD) over the nonpayment of millions of dollars for paddies they supplied to major company owned by coalition supporter Turhane Doegra.
Citizens’ Report understands that some of the farmers who hail from villages along the West Bank and West Coast of Demerara have been owed since 2016.

The matter was even taken to court but Doerga, in response to the legal proceedings, is denying owing the rice farmers a dime.

However, President of the Rice Producers Association (RPA), Dharamkumar Seeraj explained the farmers have nothing to gain from fabricating such an allegation and that all they want is their rightfully earned monies so they can sustain their livelihoods and continue to provide for their families.

Citizens Report understands that altogether, more than $10M is owed to approximately 30 farmers.

Of particular concern, Seeraj said, is that Doerga is now planning to open a multimillion dollar oil refinery but yet is refusing to pay the rice farmers.
