Update: Petition likely to be filed after release of controversial GPSU election results

Charging that there has been no official release of the results from last Thursday (April 27, 2017) elections for a new Executive Council of the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU), presidential contender, Gregory Gaspar, has indicated that an elections petition is likely to be advanced.

The results were released to the media, last evening, by Elections Officer, Herman De Souza. According to the results, the incumbent GPSU head, Patrick Yarde, came out ahead of his opponent Gaspar.

According to Gaspar, his team, ‘Team Change’, was present at GPSU’s headquarters yesterday awaiting word on the results. He stated that De Souza left the premises, and shortly after he received a call informing him that the results of the elections had been released to the media.

Last night claims of massive rigging of the elections are being made were made by Gaspar’s team. Also, during the counting of the votes, Gaspar had complained to the relevant officials, in writing, about what he called “irregularities” in the elections process.

At an emergency news conference called last night by Gaspar’s lawyer, Nigel Hughes, Gaspar indicated that he is likely to move to file an elections petition. “
