Boat captain’s body washes up at Rose Hall foreshore after pirate attack

The body of Mahadeo Ramdial, 45, was found at the Rose Hall foreshore today, a day after his boat he captained was attacked by pirates.

He and his two-man crew, were attacked and robbed of their catch and a 40hp Yamaha Engine, yesterday about one mile in the Corentyne River, in the vicinity of Tain Settlement, Corentyne, Berbice. About 16:30 hours they were attacked and robbed of their valuables by two masked men, one armed with a cutlass.

Enquiries disclosed that the fishermen ventured out to sea, to fish on Monday May 15, 2017 at 16:00hrs in a wooden boat powered by a 40hp Yamaha Engine.

According to the police, the pirates, after committing the crime, placed the victims into their (pirates’) boat and ordered them to jump over-board, which they did but not before the captain Mahadeo Ramdial was struck to his head by one of the pirates with a cutlass.

The crew members alone managed to swim to a vessel anchored some 100 meters from the shore.

A search team had been combing the Corentyne River for the body of the boat captain.

No arrests have been made and investigations are continuing.
