Camp Street jailbreak: Three escape, two dead, fire raging at prison

Ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) are currently working to maintain order in sections of the City near the Camp Street Prison, after a jailbreak earlier today.

Two prison officers have been shot after one inmate came into possession of a firearm. It is unclear how this happened. Three prisoners have also since escaped.

Meanwhile, a major fire is raging at the prison, with at least one building on the nearby stret reportedly also on fire, given that it is close to the Camp Street Prison. The prisoners currently being held at the prison are reportedly on lockdown. It is unclear if there are any fatalities as a result of the fire.

In March this year, a fire killed 16 prisoners during a prison riot.

Additionally, residents in nearby areas, including Brickdam Street, have reported hearing gunshots and have been advised to stay indoors.

Citizens’ Report will make more details public on this developing story as it becomes available.
