GRDB owes billions to millers and exporters – RPA

The Guyana Rice Producers Association (RPA), in a statement, is calling on the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) to make urgent payments to millers and exporters, who have been owed since July 2017. “The Guyana Rice Producers Association (RPA) is calling on the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) to urgently make payments due to millers/exporters of rice to Panama. We recenlty learnt that the payments of approximately G$2 Billion is due to the millers/exporters since July 2017,” according to the RPA’s statement.

Notably, the RPA is contending that the GRDB is in a sound financial position to make these payments in part or in full immediately, since the sector is severely affected by the huge amount owing.”We are of the strong view that the GRDB is in a sound financial position based on the amount of levies collected from exporters over the years to pay these millers either fully or at least a substantial amount of the total due.”

Below is the full statement from the RPA:
The Guyana Rice Producers Association (RPA) is calling on the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) to urgently make payments due to millers/exporters of rice to Panama. We recenlty learnt that the payments of approximately G$2 Billion is due to the millers/exporters since July 2017.

Our millers supply the rice to the GRDB, the contracted party with Panama over the life of two contracts and are still awaiting payments. We are of the strong view that the GRDB is in a sound financial position based on the amount of levies collected from exporters over the years to pay these millers either fully or at least a substantial amount of the total due.

The rice sector is severely affected by this huge amount due and many farmers are still to be fully paid. Some millers are facing bankruptcy, whilst others are unable to make investements for the much needed upgrades to their facilities. This will of course affect efficiency and ultimately profitability.

Payment to suppliers for rice will better serve the industry that the squandering of the GRDB money over ill thought projects that are absolute failures. The failure of the GRDB, a Government agency, to pay the millers is another betrayal of another campaign promise by the Coalition Government.
